Vagabond: A Memoir by Tim Curry

With the 50th Anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Vagabond: A Memoir is a timely release. That movie made Tim Curry familiar to me and remains what I think of when I think of Tim Curry’s work, but the first time I saw him was actually in the movie Annie, from the 80’s. Before listening to this audiobook, I didn’t know much about him or other productions he has been involved in. Tim Curry reads the audiobook himself; I love it when authors do this, and it makes it even more special when it is a memoir. I thoroughly enjoyed his narration, though there were small parts (sentences here and there) that were noticeably added after the initial production that are jarring to hear in the midst of the original reading.
The content was fascinating to me. It felt like a regular guy telling the story of his career; there weren’t over-the-top stories you would (or I would, anyway) imagine an actor or celebrity telling, with lots of name-dropping. It genuinely feels like someone speaking of their jobs and co-workers and childhood, but it is all very interesting. I was hooked from the beginning: intrigued by the course his life has taken, and impressed with just how much he has done and the variety of mediums. I had no idea he not only did voice acting, but got his start in the theatre and continued to walk the boards throughout his career.
I highly recommend this book, especially the audiobook, for anyone interested in Tim Curry’s life, work, or a behind-the-scenes look into being an actor.
