Sea of Charms (Spellshop #3) by Sarah Beth Durst (Early Review)
I’m so glad I stuck with this series because I absolutely loved this book. With the first book (The Spellshop) I fell in love with the world but did not connect with the characters as much as I would have liked. In the second book (The Enchanted Greenhouse), I felt so disconnected with and annoyed by Terlu, the main character, and really put out by the incessant talking about plant pronouns that I DNF’d the audiobook.
So.
I don’t know if the author or editor took reviews into consideration or the author just decided to take the third book in a slightly different direction, but Sea of Charms felt like a much more approachable and lovable story and enjoyable content.
Marin is a supply runner with a boat that is ~bigger on the inside~ (DW reference? I hope so). She likes to keep to herself due to a very bad previous relationship, and somewhere along the way a sea serpent, Perri, has adopted her and follows her from job to job. What I like that is different from the other books is that Marin has a clear goal and she is confident in her ability to reach it. She has trust issues, knows it, and admits it, which makes her a much stronger character than the MC’s in the two previous books. Since she is a supply runner we get to experience so many islands, cities, and communities in this world; it truly feels like an adventure. She rescues her friend, Dax, from the biggest city during a revolution. He is a composer, music is his life, and I love the way that they interact with each other throughout the book.
This is such a cozy, wholesome, delightful read. Each book can be read on it’s own, no need to start with book one. I highly recommend this book and hope you’ll give it a try if you like cozy fantasies. Sea of Charms will be released on July 28, 2026.
I was given a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
