July 2025 Book Reviews
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna 4/5 Stars
I liked a lot about this book. The witch rules (and curses) in this particular world are unique and well thought out. There’s a full cast of characters and they’re all distinct enough to stand out and on their own. I really enjoyed reading it and plan to read the next one but it didn’t “wow” me in a way that has me giving it high praise and recommending it to all of my reader friends. If I didn’t read so many books it’s possible I would be disappointed in this one.
Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn 5/5 Stars
I was absolutely delighted by this one. I love Raybourn’s Veronica Speedwell series and was excited to find a new series by her. It has the wit and clever reveals I have come to expect from her writing. This group of women are hilarious and smart and strong and I think the organization they work for is so cleverly laid out. I fear when one likes a book as much and I like this one you can’t say too much without giving spoilers away, so just read the book!
The House Witch by Delemhach 4/5 Stars
This is a delightfully cozy book about a male house witch who gets a job as a cook for a king. The king and queen are quite progressive and accepting of his eccentricities and peculiar requests. The characters all have interesting quirks and backgrounds and I love the food descriptions.
