June 2025 Book Reviews
A Curse Carved in Bone (Saga of the Unfated #2) by Danielle L. Jensen 3/5 Stars
Unfortunately I was underwhelmed by this one, as well as my reread of A Fate Inked in Blood in preparation for the sequel. I absolutely loved the first book when it came out and I don’t know why I didn’t like it as much the second time around. This one felt like Freya was sulking and bratty for most of the book. I found her dealings with Hel and the other gods really interesting, probably my favorite parts of the book. By the end the story picked up for me but the first two-thirds or so were not as enjoyable as I had expected them to be.
Adventures in the Louvre by Elaine Sciolino 3/5 Stars
I absolutely loved the first half of this book but I think that ultimately it is too long. In the second half of the book there’s too much history that is not directly about art that makes it drag. If you love history and you love art, this may not bother you.
As a francophile and francophone, there are so many exciting tidbits about the Louvre and the art it contains that I am still glad I read it and would still recommend it. I just didn’t love all of it, but the excitement I felt at all of the behind-the-scenes and insider tips makes it worth it.
I was given a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Winter Goddess by Megan Barnard 5/5 Stars
I cannot remember the last book that destroyed me like this one. I love novels about mythology. I love a cozy fantasy with a little house and we learn what is in that little house (a cauldron, honey, and beeswax candles). I love multiple lives lived. I love nature and the seasons. I felt the love Cailleach had for her daughter and grieved for my cat again when she mourned the loss of her beloved Failinis. I cry thinking about this book and yet I love it. The grand simplicity of everyday life is captured so beautifully.
