Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley 3/5 Stars
I love most of the book, especially the first half or three quarters or so. It’s such a cozy medieval read and all of the characters are unique and likable. I love the beast speak aspect. But when there was a fight scene or lots of action or even going into detail about the curse or something else really involved I found I difficult to follow. It really took away from the book as a whole for me.
One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle 3/5 Stars
There were several things I found quite disturbing about this book. The fact that the main character seems to be more in love with her late mother than her husband is the big one. I thought the big weird thing that was going on in this book was due to her having a mental breakdown and that made her a very unreliable narrator for me. The way she treated her husband was horrible. The redeeming quality of this book is the ending though so despite being frustrated with it for most of the book, I did really enjoy the resolution and ending. And I love the descriptions of Italy. The setting is definitely a big character in this book.
Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder 3/5 Stars
Overall, this was a quick read for me. The characters didn’t get very deep but there was a lot of action to propel the story forward and keep me glued to reading. I like the world but I didn’t care for the writing or the characters, especially Yelena. It felt like a draft to me; like with a little more experience the author could have written a stronger novel.
