February Book Reviews

The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo 5/5 Stars
I have been on a serious roll this year with great Reese’s Book Club picks. I listened to the audiobook of The Light We Lost and it was both moving and devastating. I feel like this story could be yours, your sibling’s, or a friend-of-a-friend’s. The situation is so relatable and, most importantly, I feel that Lucy’s choices are too. In many books we like to read stories of the lives of the ideal versions of ourselves, and this is the messy, real-life version. This may be disappointing to some but I found it even more meaningful because of that.

A Queen in Hiding by Sarah Kozloff 5/5 Stars
I came across this book while browsing in Barnes and Noble, drawn first by the cover and then by the description. Fantasy is probably my second favorite genre but I am extremely picky about it. It can’t be too high; I need elements that ground it in our world so it is still manageable to imagine and understand what is going on. The Nine Realms series fits the bill perfectly. Several different characters are easily followed as the Queen and Princess of Weirandale flee their home in the hopes of survival. Possible the most exciting thing about this series is that the books are being released in consecutive months, not years, so we will be able to remember so many more details! The first two books are already out and the third comes out in March. I listened to the audiobook format for both books and highly recommend it because there are unique names and words that I preferred knowing the correct pronunciation of.

A Murderous Relation by Deanna Raybourn

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher 2/5 Stars
I was so looking forward to this one because I heard from a few sources that it was a great read and actually scary. There was one scene that was properly creepy (the first time something looks in her window) and I really enjoyed that, but there was absolutely nothing after that. I thought the idea of the book was interesting but fell flat for me, both with the story and most of the characters.

I wasn’t as good about writing reviews last month as I normally. I’m already trying to be better in March!
